Talk program on health system research in global health

A talk program on “Health System Research in Global Health” was held at Global Health Unit building, Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu on 2nd May 2018. It was jointly organized by Global Health Unit – Institute of Medicine (IOM) – Tribhuvan University, Transcultural Psychosocial Organization Nepal (TPO Nepal) and Division of Global Mental Health – The George Washington University – Washington DC.

The first part of the talk was given by Dr. Charlotte Hanlon, MD, PhD, who is a British psychiatrist working in the field of public mental health and health service interventions to expand access to mental health care. Her presentation focused on building trainings to improve research capacities in grassroots level with examples in mental health. Dr. Hanlon stressed on the need of collaboration among national and international partners for the development of global health research. The second part of the talk was given by Muralikrishnan R. Kartha, PhD, who is a health economist with experience in conducting economic evaluations of health care interventions. His presentation focused on the concept of health economics and why it is important for global health research. Dr. Kartha described how health economics deals with the scarcity and choices in health care and also emphasized on its applicability in Nepal.

The talk was wrapped up by Dr. Brandon Kohrt, technical advisor of TPO Nepal, by highlighting the importance of capacity building in health system research. The presentation was followed by discussion among the participants and the speakers.
